Book Review: Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey

January 11, 2021 by Matilda London

I’ve read the first five of the Malory-Anderson Family series books. While I like Love Only Once, Tender Rebel and Say You Love Me, my favorites so far are Gentle Rogue and The Magic of You. First, some of the language could be considered a bit iffy—I’ll leave you to deduce which on your own if you choose to read; secondly, as with any historical fiction, there are some problematic issues, namely men and patriarchy, but what’s a girl gonna […]

Book Review: The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson

December 17, 2020 by Matilda London

When I heard about Breonna Taylor’s murderers evading justice with a minor charge of endangering white people, I was reading about 23-year-old Claude Neal: “…perhaps the single worst act of torture and execution in twentieth-century America occurred in the panhandle town of Marianna, Florida, a farm settlement halfway between Pensacola and Tallahassee.” When I was standing in line to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, I was reading about Ida Mae voting the first time in her life at […]

Book Review: Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey

December 7, 2020 by Matilda London

Oy, speaking of rape/non-con…I took one glance at the Goodreads reviews and decided to not even bother. I even unfollowed a celeb reviewer after reading their review of this book that was—scant, and…stuffy? Needless to say, if you’re traumatized by the subject of rape/non-con or bondage, you may wanna pass this one up; you would, however, be dismissing an amazing female protagonist in Rowena Belleme, and how Lindsey took the subject of rape/non-con and subverted it totally upending this trope […]

Book Review: Hearts Aflame by Johanna Lindsey

November 27, 2020 by Matilda London

If you’re squeamish about slavery and chains, you may as well take a pass on this entire Haardrad Family series. If you do though you’ll be missing out on some great characters. Set during the Viking and Anglo-Saxon era of British history with ‘the great’ King Alfred of Wessex, this book has one of my favorite—if not the favorite—female protagonist and couples of all time, Kristen Haardrad and Royce of Wyndhurst. Yes, another Royce. I remember reading this book way […]

Book Review: Consider This-Moments in My Writing Life after Which Everything Was Different by Chuck Palahniuk

November 22, 2020 by Matilda London

I read books about writing and creativity—all books about writing and creativity; one is never too old nor too good to learn, and I’m neither, fuckyouverymuch. When someone on Writer Unboxed recommended Chuck’s book then it incidentally went on sale, I promptly hit the buy now button. I loved Fight Club in all its dirty grimness and sincere and brutal irreverence. Chuck has a certain cringe factor à la Stephen King. He makes you uncomfortable and there’s one thing in […]

Book Review: A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught

November 21, 2020 by Matilda London

This book includes knights and castles and jousts—so much fun. I most relate to Jennifer Merrick’s stubbornness. Although, I cannot relate to her continued family loyalty—that aggravates the hell out of me. Another favorite and highly recommended. This book ends my Judith McNaught historical romance rereads. I love Royce Westmoreland—his sensitivity and empathy with Jennifer. There is a scene that pissed me off and you’ll know it when you get to it; I can only surmise that McNaught has a […]
